Firefox Search Plugin for Baidu Mp3

Baidu.com is a famous search engine in China. It's music search is pretty good. Usually I use Google as my default search engine, and use Baidu Mp3 to search music files.

The Semantic Web and Decentralization

Last week I made a presentation in the 569 class. Here is the slides. It's a talk about Tim Berners-Lee's article in Scietific American: The Semantic Web A new form of Web content that is meaningful to computers will unleash a revolution of new possibilities

After the presentation, most questions are related to "Decentralization". Why we need a decentralized Web? Why don't we build a well-organized central database, shared for everyone?

The traditional Knowledge Representation has been developed for many years. It has a central database, but how to control this database, and who should take charge of it? These are becomming bigger and bigger questions. Usually we don't trust a central database. What if the controller make mistakes? what if he is evil? Also, increasing the size of a central database becomes unmanageable.

15 years ago, when the new World Wide Web was released, as Tim said, "detractors pointed out that it could never be a well-organized library; withougt a central database and tree structure, one would never be sure of finding everything". But now you can see how successful the Web is.

In a decentralized system, everyone is able to express her idea, even when the idea is not quite clear, she can publish the half-finished plan in the Web. 1 minute later somewhere in another corner of the world, somebody might recognize/understand this idea and have a better way to make it better. We don't need a central system to verify the ideas and prove them. Information exchange can be implement instantly, and we can create a new information evolution.

Maybe, that's the power of democracy.


Dr. Lu mentioned CYC in the class. OpenCYC is a subset of CYC, while CYC is a commercial database. It is an ontology without XML.

换一种思维方式？

昨天在New York Times看到一篇文章[via slashdot]，说了许多人的电脑焦虑症：计算机本来是用来提高生产率的，但是现在许多人在用电脑的时候被各种消息干扰：去看看天气预报，IE弹出窗口，或者Email通知，或者软件更新信息...

Attention Deficit Disorder, 注意力分散（多见于儿童），就是我们这些电脑人的毛病。

所以科学家们正在研究对策。华盛顿大学的Alon考虑的方法是把后台的消息都控制起来，除非要下冰雹，或者老板发了封Email要你两小时内做完一个东西，或者有致命的错误发生，否则你一贯得不到分散注意力的消息。因此你就放心干活，因为没有消息就是好消息。
正在研究的Semantic Email就是为了帮助软件理解email的内容。当然，正在研究当中。

这个方法的缺点是：软件必须是完善的，可信赖的，才能发挥作用。否则，我在这里敲着这篇文章，忽然想：怎么老板的那封信还没来？或者是信已经发来，软件把这个消息屏蔽了？是不是软件失效了？要不我给自己发封信试试看？等等等等，精神更不能集中。

在这种软件完善之前，更多人采用的方法是：给自己一个固定的时间看信、上网看看、倒一杯咖啡。在这个时间之前，专心工作。

我更喜欢这种方式。当一个问题很难解决的时候，可以想想有没有办法避免这个问题的发生。


今天University of Michigan 的Dr. Nilesh介绍了车上的信息娱乐工具（Infortainment），包括收音机、CD播放器、mp3、iPod、手机、Palm、笔记本电脑、GPS等，怎样能够联起来，共享文件（比如说选择硬盘里的歌曲，播放到收音机中），察看地图，收邮件，接电话等等。终极应用是：

正开车时手上按一个按钮，直接说话“打开笔记本”。语音传送到收音机（控制中枢）被识别为命令（语音识别，有限集语音识别的成功率可以达到95%）。这个命令由收音机发送到笔记本电脑上，也许再要1分钟电脑才能启动完毕吧。然后下第二道命令：收电子邮件。电脑收到邮件之后，把内容转化为语音发给司机（希望没有垃圾邮件才好），然后司机还在开车的时候就可以回复邮件，处理事务。

整个讲述过程中我就一直觉得工业上需要做的事情是把车弄得安全一些快速一些，早点到目的地，就可以把笔记本拿出来，该干嘛干嘛。Dr. Nilesh一再说这种方式司机还在看着前方，没有分散注意力，但是司机的脑袋都在想公司的事情，怎么能集中精力开车呢？

周末找一些歌词，一不小心找到“[总结]粤语经典十大快歌”这个帖子，总说纷纭，各有自己心爱的歌曲。你喜欢的是什么呢？

黎 明的“I I I was born in BeiJing 不知命运是谁定”当时我练得总咬着舌头。他的“Sayolana O, Sayolana O, 忙忙匆匆的爱总有情谊在”也很好听。张学友的“但求--你未淡忘往日旧情我愿默然带着泪流只想一生跟你走”多么荡气回肠啊。下一首是他的“独自去偷欢”。 (Verygood提醒“独自去偷欢”是刘德华的歌曲。然后我又记起张学友的“爱火花”了。)

当然，林子祥的“阿lam日记”是最快的，但是我不太喜欢。他的“敢爱敢做”才酷呢：

说到快歌，李克勤的“红日”和“护花使者”是绝对不能漏掉的。

9首了。再加上张国荣的“暴风一族”“无心睡眠”和谭咏麟的“火美人”，这个列表就算结束了。其实草蜢、Beyond肯定还有合适的快歌，只是现在想不起来。

顺便又搜到这篇“香港歌坛的昨天（FireFox不友好）”，被转得到处都是。

Google给了每个Gmail用户50个邀请名额，这年头，还有人找不到Gmail么？然后开了“推荐”服务：只要你推荐别人参加这个老鼠会，就可以得到$20。我翻了一下已经参加了两个半月的AdSense广告联播，发现：
网页展示5000，广告点击17，广告收入$0.76

像这样的生意真是没法做。本来很珍贵的邀请名额，一下子臭了大街送不出去；AdSense里有些点击很值钱，有些却不算上去。你作为它的Partner，永远不知道它会怎么改变规则，只能跟在后面亦步亦趋。

Google，开始变性了么？或者，原来纯朴的Google，在复杂的商业世界，也变得现实？
